MELASMA
Melasma is a chronic pigmentation condition that causes symmetrical patches of brown, grey-brown, or bluish discolouration to develop on the skin, most commonly appearing on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, chin, and bridge of the nose. It occurs when melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin, become overactivated and produce excess melanin in response to hormonal influences and UV exposure. Melasma is significantly more common in women than men, particularly those with medium to darker skin tones, and is often referred to as the mask of pregnancy due to its strong association with hormonal changes during pregnancy. However, it can also be triggered by contraceptive use, hormone replacement therapy, thyroid dysfunction, and prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection. Unlike other forms of pigmentation, melasma tends to be deeper within the skin and more diffuse in nature, making it one of the more challenging pigmentation conditions to treat. It often follows a cyclical pattern, improving with reduced sun exposure and hormonal stability before returning with triggers such as summer months or hormonal fluctuations.
While melasma is completely harmless, its visible and often prominent nature can have a significant impact on confidence and self-esteem. At The Golden Hive, our approach to melasma is careful, considered, and highly personalized, using treatments designed to suppress melanin production, fade existing discolouration, and strengthen the skin’s barrier — delivering gradual, lasting improvements while minimizing the risk of further pigmentation.
What Causes Melasma?
Fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone, particularly during pregnancy, when using hormonal contraceptives, or during menopause, stimulate melanocytes to overproduce melanin, triggering the characteristic patches of melasma.
